DAVID BEATTY
Mindfulness based stress-reduction
David Beatty was born and educated in England. He has lived on three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa, and spent much of his life as a photographer, traveller and writer with an interest in socio- ecological issues. His engagement with mindfulness began in 1981 during a long retreat on a small Buddhist hermitage island in southern Sri Lanka in the Theravada tradition, from which the modern secular Western forms of mindfulness practice evolved. Many years travelling in the subcontinent allowed him the opportunity to explore the traditions and philosophies in which these contemporary forms are grounded. Today he is a qualified Mindfulness Facilitator in the MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) Programme created by Jon Kabat-Zinn in compliance with the Good Practice Standards guidelines issued by BAMBA – formerly the UK Network for Mindfulness-based Teacher Training Organizations. He also holds a Diploma in Relational Mindfulness from the Karuna Institute in Devon UK. He has run MBSR courses in Kenya for several years, as well as more informal Mindfulness Sessions.
